THOBE 2020

Fashion Design workshop

Final Exhibition, Ramallah 2021

In 2020, I participated in THOBE 2020, a virtual fashion design workshop organized by UNIDO in collaboration with local and international partners, focused on reimagining the Palestinian traditional dress through contemporary design. The workshop was mentored by Christophe Beaufays, Belgian fashion designer and former assistant to Jean Paul Gaultier.

Within this framework, I developed a dress inspired by Palestinian embroidery motifs, translating their symbolic patterns into a modern silhouette and cut. The embroidered motif begins with a structured geometric order at the chest and gradually dissolves toward the lower part of the dress into pixel-like fragments, suggesting transformation and continuity. Loose threads act as soft chains, carrying the embroidered chest panel like a piece of jewelry. They connect the neckband to the body of the dress and reappear at the waist and elbows as intentional tears, bridging the classic thobe with contemporary fashion language.

This experience contributed to my ongoing practice of integrating cultural memory with modern fashion design approaches.
